The sun was setting deep into the horizon when Smileu heard a heavy knock on his door. Standing in his entryway was a lone marine holding a roll of parchment in her hand. A marine at his doorstep told him more than the message she carried ever could - a professional soldier, not one of the ragtag militia guardsmen or one of those hired thug mercenaries, was dispatched as a runner to fetch him. Taking the note, Smileu read it, considered the contents, and then nodded to the marine, bidding her to take him to the spot. It was not a long walk to the scene of the crime. The docks were the site of many flophouses, taverns and inns where sailors and dockworkers alike would come and rest their heads. In these places of ill repute, where the ale flowed and tempers flared, it was rare where a night passed without one of these houses becoming a scene of violence or the guards bursting in to break up a fight before it turned into a riot. The presence of guardsmen on the street was not uncommon here; but the sight of a few marines milling about as well was enough to intrigue Smileu as he was led into a flophouse where all the patrons had been cleared out and onto the street for the time being. The main floor was a maze of small private rooms; each one was lined with bunk beds and dressers with a communal table in the middle, with a beaded curtain or filthy sheet for a door. Every room they passed was empty - save for the last corner room, where a lone guardsman stood just outside looking quite green around the gills. The stench hit Smileu before he could see into the room, but it still left him ill-prepared for the scene: Playing cards littered the blood-soaked wooden floor, accompanied by the face-down body of a dwarf. A human lay sprawled against the wall, his throat slit and belly open. A long knife lay on the floor just outside his open grasp. On the bottom bunk was a grayed elven form steeped in wine-soaked sheets. And sitting at the table was an orc with his head leaned back as if to appraise the state of the ceiling. His throat was slashed open, staining his shirt and the whole table red. A tiefling in marine armour stared at the sight with a grave expression. Seeing Smileu come in, the tiefling turned and approached him. Smileu recognized the man immediately as Lieutenant Enzio Sgarnarro - a good man, by all accounts. "Smileu." he addressed the elf with a curt nod of respect. "Thank you for coming on such short notice."

Smileu looked at the scene a moment longer before giving a nod to Lt. Sgarnarro.
"Well it's not every day that you all come knocking on my door; which tells me this isn't what it appears to be on the surface and you want it kept quiet."
He scanned the room again, making a few mental notes before looking back to the Tiefling.
"Tell me what you know so far."

The Lieutenant sighed and adjusted his helmet as he turned back to face the carnage in front of them. "Well, the orc's name was Tor Gar'nash; forty-three, worked on the docks hauling cargo and handling the heavy cranes with his crew here - his name was on the paper for the room, so his was the first one we could get. The rest bunked here too - Morg, Quinn, and the poor bastard laying in the cot is Foren." He pointed to the dwarf, human, and finally the elf respectively as he listed off their names. "No idea what happened to the elf's hand, but it looks like Tor, Quinn and Morg were having a game of Gents when tempers got flared - possibly some cheating - and then the knives came out. Between all the bottles and the stench in the room we figure they were all too drunk to fight smart and all of them just killed each other."
Enzio leaned up against the doorframe and crossed his arms, "No big loss if you ask me. Tor and his crew were suspected in a couple of local crimes and rough-housing of some shopkeepers, but nothing really stuck."

Smileu nodded as he listened, then frowned slightly, and looked at the room again briefly before returning his attention to the Lieutenant.
"That's certainly what you're supposed to think, Lieutenant..."
Smileu walked over to where one of the knives was, and using his boot, kicked it up into his hand and caught it. He walked back over to the Lieutenant and held it out to show him.
"These are good for stabbing - quick hits on someone in succession. One or two may not kill someone tough but enough will bring down anyone. However..."
He leaned down, picked up Tor's limp, dead arm and turned it over, exposing his palm. Smileu took the blade and dragged it across the palm, hard, and left only a small cut behind in the orc's thick-skinned palm.
"They're notoriously bad at slicing."
He put the arm back on the table and set the knife beside it, and then looked around the room again.
"They didn't get heated at a game of cards. This crew was more than willing to go the mile for each other. Despite Tor's unrefined persona, he cared about these people. He took care of them. If someone was cheating at cards there might have been a few knuckle throws, but nobody would have gone for daggers..."
He trailed off again and then gave the Lieutenant a very flat look.
"These people were assassinated, Lieutenant. And not by each other. Someone came here and very deliberately and very carefully killed them. And didn't want you or anyone else to be the wiser."
Smielu paused at that point, allowing the Lieutenant to take in what he'd said and shown.

The Lieutenant frowned as Smileu worked the room and arrived at his conclusion. Assassination was a noble's word: it was the kind of word they used to sanitize when the knives came out - give it some mysticism and aura of refinement. Nobody noble was killed - they were assassinated.
Following the elf's train of thought, Enzio paced around the room, careful to not step into a puddle of blood or disturb the bodies. "Why would someone want to kill some lowly dockworkers? I know you kept an eye on Tor once in a while, which is part of the reason I brought you in."
With a heavy sigh he added, "The other reason is your mother asked after you."

Smileu considered the Lieutenant's words for a moment as he asked the question, ignoring the last of his statements for the moment.
"Because they failed..."
He trailed off, narrowing his eyes, thinking.
"Lieutenant, this was an Agreement job. But...it's messy. Savage. Even for them. Tor was doing jobs for the agreement and he failed his most recent one - a hit on someone that was poorly timed and poorly thought-out. And the Agreement usually clean up loose ends, but this...this was passionate. Angry. Whoever did this was sending a message."
He let a beat pass before he sighed and then just looked the Lieutenant in the eyes. It couldn't be avoided any longer despite how much Smileu wanted to.
"What did she ask about, exactly?"

Lieutenant Enzio frowned at the thought. "Are you saying this was personal? If so, we might not just be looking at the Agreement - but who hired them for the hit. The Gentleman's Agreement doesn't usually go for wet work - they're smugglers and black market sure, but not knife work isn't their usual style."
The tiefling scratched his nose. It felt harder to talk personal with Smileu than about the murder scene before them. "Only wanted to know where you were. Her last letters to the address you left her all came back saying someone else lived there. She knows you work down here, but the Grand Commissar wouldn't give up where. She gave me this last time she was at the service house."
Undoing a pouch on his belt, Enzio produced a crisp folded note bearing the crimson seal of House Avallar.

"I think it was. Or they knew more than they could be left allowed to keep aware. Maybe there's a new player in town. Which...it's been a while since we had people willing to get their hands this dirty in the city."
Smileu considered another few moments.
"I think you'd better keep your ears open. Something about all this doesn't sit well with me, and I don't mean the gore."
As the Lieutenant pulled the letter out, Smileu sighed. There was a reason he had given the last address he lived at even after he'd moved. She meant well, most of the time, but - some things just weren't ever going to be reconcilable.
"Tell the Commissar the next time he's down in these parts his drinks are on me for the night."
Smileu considered not taking the letter but this had nothing to do with the Lieutenant, who was in general an honest man. He took the letter in his hands and opened it, reading the contents.

Despite his professional demeanor, Lieutenant Enzio gave a visible sigh at the thought, "Well, it's been what? Ten years since the last major gang war? Sounds like it's time for another to start up again, I was just hoping it wouldn't start on Deliverance Day, is all."
Looking at the dead dwarf, Enzio nodded, "I'll pass it along to him. And I'll get the boys to come in here and get these bodies moved to the slabs for preparation. Do you want me to tell the Morts to hold off until we get a better look at the corpses?"

Smielu read the letter, and folded it up and put it into a pocket on his belt. This was for another time.
He considered a moment and then pointed to the back of Tor's neck, and the wound on the Elf.
"You'll find red coins under Tor's neck and in that cut on the elf; seems to be indicative of a new player in town. Tor had one for the botched assassination attempt he made earlier this week. Not sure you can do much with 'em and I'll take them myself if not; might lead somewhere. Otherwise, slab 'em and proper rights and all. There's not much more here for us to take, I think."
With that, Smielu waited for the Lieutenant to make his decision regarding the coins and moved to the door to prepare to exit the room.
"Thanks for the call - and the letter, even if it's not what I was hoping to get today. I'll keep you informed of anything I find."

Lieutenant Enzio furrowed his brow and stepped close to examine the elf's body. Producing a knife, he cut a small slit in the elf's neck just large enough to slip a finger in and feel the hard surface of a coin. His eyes widened in a mix of shock at Smileu's discovery, and his own shame for having missed what the elf so casually spotted. "Way you spot details I'd be afraid to play you in a game of Scoundrels."
He stood up from the bed and wiped his knife on the sheet, "I'll take the coins and see if I can find anything about them from the Exchequer. Not too many coinsmiths in town who don't work for them." The tiefling added thoughtfully, dropping an obvious hint. "Might not get there for a few days, though."
Before Smileu departed, Enzio sheathed the knife, "Thanks again for your help, Smileu. Got plans for the evening?"
