“You’re frustrated, Korruk”
The white haired and bearded Ghaza Gallack brought his mount's canter back to a walk as he came alongside Korruk, leaving Tordora and Dhakin behind them. With the rain beating down and making a muddy mess of the road their travel had slowed on their way to Vynne, and even worse if it kept like this it was going to be another day of travel.
“Yes, I am Ghaza. Would you look at this sha we are dealing with?”
There was an edge in his tone as as his hair clung to his face, his jacket buttoned tightly as he made sure to manage the mess of the road in a way that was both expedient and safe for his horse.
“Not about what is happening, about why we’re here.”
“Nonsense, I understand the knight’s tour and its importance.”
“Your father is helping you in ways you don’t understand.”
“How?”
Korruk snapped, a piercing glance side eyeing the veteran of the Orgthengarrian legions.
“I should be in court with the others, my Father serves as an advisor to our legions greatest officers, I should be thanking the Arbiter for the chance to be there, or at the very least preparing to test for the praetorian and a chance to serve as the Emperor’s guard.”
A growl was hidden in the back of this throat as he lamented his lack of opportunities.
“And all of this would leave you in the same four walls you have always known. All of that pride learned from words on a page and nostalgia real or imagined. You have lost no opportunity, and you should know that you stubborn fool, grumbling like your father when he served under me.”
Korruk’s nostrils flared, his shoulders growing less tense as he looked forward, dipping his head for a moment before bringing it back up.
“I feel like I should be doing more. I’ve out paced many of my peers and -”
“And you have been outpaced by many. The walls of the capital held no method that would substitute the lessons of the world as we know it. Your father is trying to give you the same advantages he had, but doing it without the need to march with the Legions. The Wanderer has looser lips than the Arbiter, and this is your chance to meet them, so stop being a veruka. What did your mother tell you?”
Korruk’s eyes rolled as he sighed.
“Heroes don’t seek to fill another's shadow, they are too busy casting their own.”
“So if you want to be like Khaldor, stop trying to be like Khaldor - he was trying to be nobody else when he took the Gorgon by the horns.”
“You make a point Ghaza, and it frustrates me, you know that?”
“As does dealing with you, Korruk. Now if we push the ground should gain enough firmness that we can find ourselves in Vynne under moonlight and sleep in a damned decent bed.”
“Well then, Tordora and Dhakin known we are pushing the pace then, yes?”
“Aye, Sir.”
“And Ghaza,”
“Yes?”
“Thank you.”
“Just pulling your head head out of your ass as I was told too.”
Korruk smirked and nodded to the grizzled warrior before he began dropping back to pass the message along.
Vynne…Will you be the first chapter in my own tale?
